A brief history of Freemasonry

Freemasonry traces its roots to the stonemasons guilds of the Middle Ages. While the precise origins are lost to history, early documents and lodge records reveal a continuous line of tradition that became the fraternity we know today.

Old Charges

Early documents outline Masonic history and customs, including the Halliwell Manuscript (Regius Poem).

1717

First Grand Lodge

Four London lodges formed the first Grand Lodge of England, marking the start of modern Freemasonry.

1731

Masonry in America

Lodges were active in the colonies when Benjamin Franklin joined the fraternity.

Dec 15, 1782

Grand Lodge of New York

Organized under a Provincial Grand Warrant from the Grand Lodge of England.

June 6, 1787

Independent Jurisdiction

New York declared independence from English oversight and continues to govern Masonry statewide.
